Mission Statement

Red Zone Cycling’s mission is: Be Safe…Have Fun…and Ride Fast….really, really FAST. While we are teaching safety, having fun and going fast, we expect to develop and train youth to be winners on and off the bike and believe character counts. We want our team in the Zone…the Red Zone when necessary!

Vision Statement

It is the vision of Red Zone Cycling to become the premiere Junior Development Team in the state of Kentucky. We have a passion for safety. We are parents too, and want to instill in every one of our riders the necessary physical and mental skills to be respect safety and this takes constant training. We will train in technique, etiquette, rules and sportsmanship to help create good ambassadors for our sport as well as good community members. We expect to see our older riders lead by example and develop winning attitudes among their teammates. The Red Zone Cycling vision is to foster and train these youth to be competitive in three key cycling disciplines: Road, Cyclocross and Mountain Biking.

Value Statement

We value others as much as ourselves and commit to serving our fellow teammates and those we race against with the utmost respect…even when that is hard. We value health and fitness and are committed to training hard so that we can race well for our team, and serve others when needed. We want to be role models for other junior competitors, in our actions, our attitude and outlook.

Structure

Red Zone Cycling is designed for young men and woman of all riding abilities ages 6-16. Those that dedicate themselves to learning and training will move to higher levels of racing with increased challenges. The development pipeline moves younger riders of beginning skill levels up to the elite level of junior racers. The “elite” Junior Team is the core group of riders that will represent Red Zone Cycling at the highest level - in national and potentially international events. The 15-16 year old junior level riders will typically have USCF Senior Category III-IV licenses.

Louisville is working to become one of America's top bike-friendly cities. Red Zone Cycling has caught onto the cycling passion and created a team for young junior cyclists that the city, the state and the entire region can be proud of.  Red Zone Cycling embodies the spirit of our great city, along with a desire to bring youth towards a healthier lifestyle and vision for the future.

Mayor Jerry Abramson, Louisville, Kentucky

USA Cycling’s junior teams have always been looked upon as an opportunity for growth; a chance to develop talent and bring new youth into cycling. In reading the vision statement of Red Zone Cycling, we have seen a great addition to the development of future champions in the Red Zone Junior Development Team. In one short year, they have made waves nationally and have many young men and women ready to fill the pipeline for years to come. This team shows what can be done with the rights sponsors and guidance.

Benjamin Sharp, USAC Junior Program Manager

While attending my first-ever cycling event in Kentucky, at the Louisville round of the 2007 US Gran Prix of Cyclo-Cross Series, I quickly realized that such a major event was here for a reason: Louisville has an awesome cycling community, with much of its foundation being the Red Zone Cycling program for juniors. The Red Zone kids and their families perfectly represented Louisville, welcoming cyclists from all over the country, organizing a first-class event, and competing with the best racers. Maintaining such a strong foundation of youth cycling programs will ensure that Louisville continues to grow into a reknowned cycling area.

Ben Turner, Manager, CLIF BAR Development Cyclo-Cross Team (Boulder, CO)

When we started the Louisville kids' cyclocross program in 2007, we didn't know what to expect.  A year later, we are overwhelmed with the success we've had.  A typical Friday night 'cross practice draws about 30 kids.  And we've had as many as 50 kids.

Another unexpected result of kids' 'cross is the Red Zone Cycling Team. RZ grew out of kids' 'cross.  Red Zone is a grass-roots, kids'-cycling program run by some smart and motivated parents that is getting kids on bikes and into bike racing.  To my knowledge, Red Zone is the only kids'-only bike team in the region.  Red Zone is the future of cyclocross and cycling in Louisville.

Red Zone works one kid at a time.  Its results already include podium placings at the 2007 Cyclocross National Championships.  Just as important, perhaps more important, Red Zone's results include lots of kids who have taken up cycling and gone from sedentary to active.  And these kids are spreading the word to their friends.

With all its success, Red Zone has helped put Louisville, KY on the national cyclocross map.  People have taken notice of both the team's race results and its participation level.  And this isn't just talk. Red Zone has a Cyclocross Magazine article to prove it.

Red Zone works.  I'm proud to have had a small part in getting it off the ground.

Robert Bobrow - Captain, Calistoga Racing Team and founder of Louisville Kids Cross Program
